The Bentwood Chair was first produced in 1859.  Over the past 150 years it has come to represent the modernist values of economy, durability and humbleness.  As we move more quickly into the 21st Century, our hunger for money is reaching crisis point and we are leaving these values behind.  I have used the chair as a metaphor for a society that is crumbling.
Beginning with photographing the decoration on the chair, I then became interested in the chair itself.  Dissecting the image and putting it back together, David Hockney style, I found that this altering of perspective, suggested the subjective way western society views itself. The method of photo-transfer lends a faded disintegrative quality of time and memory.
In an attempt for the work to become more powerful, I have produced the images on a larger scale. The blown up and photo transferred images of the chair have become fractured and disintegrated. In some places, fading away altogether, representing a disappearing society and the loss of a way of life.

Cultural narrative – or what the stuff we leave on our porch says about us. An empty chair can be a nostalgic reminder of the passing of time and people.
It can evoke sadness and loneliness or peace and tranquillity.   We can imbue it with character and personality and see ourselves in its embrace.
The empty chair invites speculation.
