Artist's Statement
"Unleashed"
Deb St Leger
Mr Boo was the first. My experiment with
anthropomorphism: the attributing of human traits, behaviour and
personalities to animals.
Fascinated by the great variety of dog
breeds and associated personalities I started by painting Mr Boo (my own dog of
dubious origins) with his somewhat troubled and worried look. By close cropping
the over life sized dog faces, with emphasis on eyes, ears and noses, I hoped
to illustrate these human associated characteristics.
Unleashed is a small collection of these
experiments with dog personalities. Bella has an aloof casual indifference,
while Sam, of the single eye, has an unabashed eager enthusiasm. Dogs of
working breeds have intense focus and concentration, while others have relaxed
playful dispositions. Boris has a thoughtful resignation in his eye, while
whippets always seem cautious and uncertain. Dogs can be inquisitive, alert and
single-minded, others are just plain cute!
The way we ascribe human characteristics
and personalities to our canine companions can only strengthen our bond with
these animals and enhance our own sense of wellbeing.
